Physician Spotlight on Dr. Timothy J. Walden

What made you interested in joint replacement as a specialty?

I am drawn to joint replacement by the ways in which it offers the opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting impact on a patient’s quality of life. Providing a good solution for patients who no longer get relief from non-operative management is very gratifying.

I also enjoy the technical aspects of adult reconstruction. Whether it is carefully executing each procedure, planning complex cases, or staying up to date on utilizing advanced techniques such as the direct anterior approach for hip replacement and robotic-assisted knee replacement, my mind stays busy and happy. The combination of precision, innovation, and the ability to restore function makes this specialty especially fulfilling and fun for me.

What is your practice philosophy?

I believe that quality orthopedic care begins with mutual understanding between the patient and surgeon. Each patient comes to my office with their own personal goals, lifestyles, and expectations. It is my job to meet patients where they are and navigate their treatment together.

I value open communication and shared decision-making. I want to be sure that patients understand all of their options,  both operative and nonoperative, in order to feel confident in their care plan. My ultimate goal is to help each patient achieve the best possible outcome through evidence-based treatment, thoughtful planning, and compassionate care.

What can patients expect during their first appointment with you?

Patients can expect a thorough evaluation and an open conversation about their problems. We’ll discuss how their symptoms are affecting their day-to-day life, review their medical history, perform a focused examination, and go over any imaging together.

I’ll explain their likely diagnosis in straightforward terms, explain potential nonsurgical or surgical treatment options, and potential next steps while answering any questions that they may have. My goal is for every patient to leave their first visit with a clear understanding of their condition, belief in the shared decision making process, and confidence in our plan moving forward.

How do you help patients decide when it’s time to consider joint replacement?

Joint replacement is typically considered when a patient has radiographic evidence of degenerative hip or knee disease, their hip or knee pain begins to significantly limit daily activities, and conservative treatments are no longer providing meaningful relief of their pain.

My role is to help patients understand all of their options and determine the treatment that best fits their goals, lifestyle, expectations, and overall health. If surgery is the right choice, I will work with my patients to prepare for the procedure to help them achieve a successful outcome and lasting relief of their symptoms.

What do you enjoy most about your work? What do you enjoy most outside of work?

The most rewarding part of my work is seeing patients return to the activities that mean the most to them. Whether it’s walking comfortably, traveling, exercising, keeping up with family, or simply waking up and going bed without pain, it’s incredibly fulfilling to help people live fuller, happier lives.

Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing ice hockey, spending time outdoors, hiking, skiing, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.
