Hip Resurfacing

Hip Resurfacing is a form of Hip Replacement that has become more popular in recent years. Resurfacing has been performed in some form for almost 30 years. Results were mixed with these earlier types due to limited technology and manufacturing and also limited surgical techniques.

Recent advancements in Resurfacing technology has greatly advanced its outcomes. Improved designs and manufacturing have greatly improved the implant and its ability to last decades in the body. Improved surgical techniques have allowed for better and safer implantation and more precise recreation of a normal hip.

Hip resurfacing differs from Total Hip Replacement in that the femoral head and neck are preserved, thus retaining the normal mechanical functioning of the hip. It is still hip surgery that is very similar to Hip Replacement in regards to risks and muscle involvement.

Advantages of Resurfacing include

-femoral head and neck are preserved

-large ball reduces the risk of dislaocation

-recreate normal hip mechanics, thus more likely to return to a normal gait

-recreate normal bone stress in the hip bones

-metal on metal bearing reduces lysis and loosening and decreases wear of the components

Risks of Resurfacing include the normal risks of surgery

-infection

-blood loss

-blood clots

Special risks include

-fracture of the femoral neck during and after the surgery

-no long term data, the newer implants have been around for ~10 years

-more difficult surgery than Total Hip Replacement, taking longer to do and fewer surgeons who perform it

Resurfacing is not meant for all people with hip disease. The surgery is usually limited to males under age 65 and females under 55 with no osteoporosis or osteopenia. Minimal deformity of the hip can be present and lack of kidney disease is a must for people getting metal on metal replacements.

Surface Replacement of the Hip is an excellent option for the younger active patient with hip disease. As with all medical treatments, the risks and benefits should always be considered before undergoing a procedure.
